Wedding Ring Jackets

A customer had already purchased an engagement ring, the one pictured to the left. As is so often the case, thoughts regarding a wedding ring or wedding rings had been entirely ignored. The customer asked that I make two rings, one to fit on each side of the engagement ring and that these be connected by two bars underneath to form a jacket for the engagement ring to slide in and out of from the top. In each side they wanted to include a series of tapered baguette diamonds to maintain a continuity with regard to the overall appearance of the gemstones in the engagement ring.
Due to the complex shape of the ring, this was a case in which it was appropriate to use wax to form the exact shape of the two rings prior to the casting process. The customer was able to see the waxes and to assess how each fit its particular side of the ring. Once approved, I used the waxes to create duplicates in gold and set the stones set the appropriate configurations. Ultimately, the customer chose to have the two wedding rings soldered permanently together, one on each side of the engagement ring as opposed to having it made into a wedding ring jacket.

Seen to the left are the three rings soldered together to make them one. In that the overall ring shank (the part of the ring that surrounds the lower portion of the finger) is now considerably heavier than that of the original engagement ring, it will have less tendency to disfigure over time, thus lending itself to many more years of wear without problems. To me, the engagement seemed incomplete. What has been added to it still allows it to maintain its original character but it now seems more fulfilled.
